CityPaint 2008!!!

Come support "CityPaint 2008" this Saturday, April 19! “CityPaint 2008” expands the Baltimore Mural Program by seeking to create 20 murals around the city this season. Six of those 20 murals will be within Waverly Main Street at the Waverly Giant supermarket at the intersection of Old York Road and 33rd Street.

Mayor Sheila Dixon will unveil “CityPaint 2008” at the Waverly Giant on Saturday, April 19 at 10:30 a.m.

Several artists, including established local muralists Gary Mullen, Michael Owen, and Danamarie Hosler, were chosen to help paint the mural. Mr. Mullen has painted the Arena Players building at 801 McCullough Street, while Mr. Owen and Ms. Hosler have painted murals at the Downtown Farmers Market under the Jones Falls Expressway.

And hey, while you're there, why not pick up a broom and help out WMS in its part of the Mayor's 9th annual Spring Cleanup!

Check out these accepted designs for the Waverly Giant mural!

These murals are simply beautiful!

The Mullen murals, in particular, are just stunning. His skillful rendering of the neighborhood and use of Cubist aesthetic - particularly the backwards lettering, and the way in which he has re-assembled pieces of the community into a cohesive abstract form - makes me proud to be part of this community.

It is awesome that public and private funds are used to support this effort.

Hurray for pulling this off, and thank you Greater Homewood, BOPA and all of the people who worked so hard to make this project happen!
